Asianet is an Indian general entertainment channel broadcasting in the Malayalam language. Based in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, the channel is part of Asianet Communications Limited owned by Star India. Again, Star India is a wholly-owned subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company. It was in March 2014, Star India acquired the full stake in Asianet Communications.
Commencing its operations by the end of 1992 and then officially launched on 30 August 1993, Asianet was the first privately owned television channel in Malayalam and the second to broadcast in the language after DD Malayalam. Now, for many years Asianet tops the table of most popular Malayalam TV Channels in terms of viewership.
With 4.85 million subscribers on YouTube and another 3.2 million followers on Facebook, Asianet has a strong presence in social media networks.
Asianet Communications operates a total of nine channels in three languages. Apart from Asianet, the other Malayalam channels that are part of Asianet Communications are Asianet Plus, Asianet Movies, and Asianet Middle East. Tamil Channels Star Vijay, Vijay Super, Star Vijay Music, and Kannada Channels Star Suvarna Plus are also part of Asianet Communications.
In 2018, Asianet completed 25 years of operations. The channel celebrated its 25 years with a star night event on 2 December 2018 at FACT Sports Association Ground. Here is the news report about the event:
